Polycom is another popular manufacturer of videoconference equipment used throughout NHS Scotland. The majority of Polycom equipment currently in use is probably made up of various models in the HDX family, pictured left, which covers single-user desktop systems such as the 4000 to full room installations utilising the HDX 8000’s dual camera input and dual screen output. Their use stretches back a number of years and there are a number of older systems still in use such as the VSX series which were originally designed to sit on top of CRT screens. A number of ‘telepresence’ suites utilise multiple high-end HDX systems linked to multiple cameras. Some NHS regions use more portable models, such as the VVX video phone to provide patients with access to their clinicians, or in some cases, group therapy classes from their homes.
